Approche quantitative de la fonction de nourricerie jouée par les systèmes vasières-estuaires ArchiMer
Parlier, Emmanuel.
Coastal fish populations settle more or less frequently, at various stages, estuarine systems. Tidal marshes are one of the components of these mosaics of habitats. The first part of this work describes fish assemblages through the utilisation of these systems by fishes analysed in order to propose a revised functional classification of ecological guilds. T h i s new classification is used to compare fish communities of four estuarine systems in the western coast of France: the Mont Saint- Michel Bay, the Saint-Brieuc Bay, the Loire estuary and the Aiguillon Bay. The second part aims at characterizing the nursery function as defined by Beck et al. (2001). Acombinative approach based on gut content analysis, and stable isotope analysis shows that Yo Y s e a...

Consommation de la macro-faune invertébrée benthique par les oiseaux d'eau en baie du Mont-Saint-Michel ArchiMer
Le Mao, Patrick; Pasco, Pierre-yves; Provost, Sébastien.
An evaluation of the energy transfer between zoobenthos and water birds in the Mont-Saint-Michel bay was carried out from October 2003 until September 2004. Global consumption by waders is similar to that estimated on data collected 20 years ago, in spite of strong variations in seasonal occurrence and species composition of shorebirds populations in the bay. Total consumption (including gulls and predatory anseriformes) is about 2,15 g ash free dry weight/m2 /year, a very low figured if compared to results from the Wadden Sea. These two results seems to confirm the initial findings from the PNEC research program in the Mont-Saint-Michel bay: the bay is an oligotrophic system (oceanic type) presenting a strong functional inertness in the mid and long term,...

Distributional overlap rather than habitat differentiation characterizes co-occurrence of bivalves in intertidal soft sediment systems ArchiMer
Compton, Tanya J.; Troost, Tineke A.; Van Der Meer, Jaap; Kraan, Casper; Honkoop, Pieter J. C.; Rogers, Danny I.; Pearson, Grant B.; De Goeij, Petra; Bocher, Pierrick; Lavaleye, Marc S. S.; Leyrer, Jutta; Yates, Mick G.; Dekinga, Anne; Piersma, Theunis.
Diverse species assemblages are often associated with a diversity of habitat structures. Sedimentary systems seem to be no exception, as within sedimentary systems benthic species diversity within a sample point appears to correlate with sediment grain size complexity. However, it remains to be shown whether total benthic species diversity relates to a system's sediment heterogeneity across multiple systems. In the present paper we examined whether bivalve diversity is associated with: (1) sediment heterogeneity across systems and (2) sediment grain size complexity within systems, at 9 temperate and tropical tidal flat systems. Although bivalve life-history strategies, like post-settlement habitat selection, might suggest that sediment heterogeneity should...

Interactions between a natural food web, shellfish farming and exotic species: The case of the Bay of Mont Saint Michel (France) ArchiMer
Arbach Leloup, F.; Desroy, Nicolas; Le Mao, Patrick; Pauly, D.; Le Pape, Olivier.
To ensure sustainable uses of the coastal zone, an integrated ecosystemic approach and ecosystem models are required to frame ecological processes and evaluate environmental impacts. Here, a mass-balance trophic (Ecopath) model of the Mont Saint Michel Bay (MSMB) was developed, to analyze the bay's functioning as an ecosystem. This bay, intensively exploited by fishing and for shellfish farming, is also suffering from the proliferation of the gastropod Crepidula fornicata, an exotic species. The MSMB model has 18 compartments, from the primary producers to top predators, and emphasizes the large biomass of filter feeders. The model identified the MSMB as a highly productive ecosystem controlled largely from the bottom-up, and strongly impacted by huge...
